Hi everyone! I`m excited to take part in all the great activities being proposed. If you’d like to learn more about democracy and social movements across Canada, Quebec and Indigenous territories, I’d invite you to come to the following event:

    Raising Our Voices

The state of dissent and free expression across Canada

    When: Aug. 11, 9am to 11:30am
Where: Université du Québec à Montréal – Pavillon SH (Local SH-3620), 200, rue Sherbrooke Ouest

In many regions of the world, whether it be under authoritarian or « democratic » regimes, the landscape facing civil society is littered with obstacles that hinder the ability of individuals and organizations to speak out and debate important social issues and decisions. The first part of this workshop will feature overview presentations on the state of the environment facing civil society internationally, as well as in Quebec, Canada and among Indigenous communities. Participants and attendees will then be invited to discuss their experiences and perspectives on the topic in order to develop strategies to improve the landscape facing civil society.

    Featuring:
Maina Kiai, UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association.

Sylvia McAdam (Saysewahum), one of the co-founders of Idle No More, is a nêhiyaw (Cree) woman, a citizen of the nêhiyaw Nation, author of « Nationhood Interrupted: Revitalizing Nehiyaw Legal Systems » and holds a Juris Doctorate (LL.B) from the University of Saskatchewan.

John Philpot, defence lawyer, specialist in international criminal law, and a member of the coordinating committee of the BDS-Quebec Coalition.

Leilani Farha, Executive Director of Canada Without Poverty and UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing.

Presented by: Voices-Voix, Pas de démocratie sans voix and the Canadian Council for International Cooperation
