What Space for Youth in the 2016 World Social Forum?

8 June 2016

Montreal, June 6th 2016 – It is with enthusiasm that the Youth Zone @ the 2016 World Social Forum (2016 WSF) is launching its final campaigns: the #YourSummerYourWSF Campaign and the call for International Youth Mobilization.

This summer, we want to invite everyone to follow our social media networks for the #YourSummerYourWSF Campaign. With this campaign addressed to 14-35 year-olds, we want to get youth outside and involved in their communities! The idea is for young people to send us a short video (or a picture accompanied with a short descriptive text) explaining how they are getting involved this summer and they could become one of our youth ambassadors and see their video/picture posted on our Facebook page. Keep an eye on the #YourSummerYourWSF Campaign here: https://www.facebook.com/EspaceJeunesse2016.

Who are we?

We are more than 40 organizations dedicated to developing a Youth Zone and youth programming within the 2016 World Social Forum. From organizations working for citizen participation to youth movements for human rights, without forgetting the environment and international cooperation, there is a bit of everything. Together, we work towards constructing a program BY and FOR youth, representative of all forms of engagement that exist withing youth movements and networks today.

So far, more than 1,400 schools (elementary- to university) have received all the information to partake in and invest the Youth programming at the 2016 World social forum. We now have our own Youth Zone and tent at the Esplanade Clark (between Ste-Catherine and Maisonneuve): it is essential to drop-by between August 9th and 14th to partake in the no-less-than-spectacular activities taking place there! Finally, our programming is taking epic proportions with an activist Hip hop concert at the Metropolis and an International Youth Summit just in time for International Youth Day on August 12th.

It is primordial to ensure a strong youth representation at the 2016 WSF in order for youth-related issues to come to the forefront and for all mobilizations and actions to be genuine and impactful. The Youth Zone @ the 2016 WSF is a unique space and opportunity to unite youth from all over the planet in order to co-construct a world that corresponds to their values: a more just and equitable world.

The World Social Forum will be held from August 9th to August 14th 2016 in Downtown Montreal (UQAM,  CEGEP du Vieux-Montréal and McGill University). More than 50,000 participants and nearly 5,000 civil society organizations are expected to attend for this historic event in North America. You can register for the 2016 WSF here: www.fsm2016.org.
